Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Chris Wright

Commercial Vehicle Auctions is a independent auction house based Doncaster that has been trading sinc 1989. Managing director Chris WHgi holds regular sales on two Wednesda) each month with a throughput of up 1 200 trucks, 180 trailers and items plant. Wright also holds auctions aroun the country at customers' premises.

Four-wheeled rigids tend to operat closer to home than artics so they cloc up a lower annual mileage. Hence the tend to be kept for longer—five years i not uncommon, Wright reports.

"We haven't seen any Foden Alpha 18 tanners through the auction yet and w wouldn't expect to see many for anothe 18 months or so," he adds. "Foden is minor player in a big market. Th Cummins/Eaton/ Mentor driveline has sound reputation, and as Fodens are no' built at Leyland they should have th same build quality as Oafs. "The use of the big steel cab fror Oaf's heavy truck range has changed th truck's image and made the range mor popular, not least with drivers. Resift values are likely to improve over those o earlier Foden models.

Pelican Engineering was established just after the First World War. After 50 years in Leeds the Foden dealership moved last year to a 2.5-acre site at Normanton, close to J13 on the M62. It sells new and used trucks, while its vehicle hire division has particular expertise in the area of tipper and ejector hydraulics.

Sales director Ken Grindrod says: "The Foden Alpha 16-tonner is still a relatively new truck but it has been very well received. We have only taken in a few so far for resale but they attract a lot of interest. It has a very robust, roomy cab with superb fixtures and fittings. Accessibility is better than for earlier models. We have the same cab on tractive units that have been in our hire fleet for two-and-a-half years and they still look like new.

"The range of bodywork is very wide. We have sold tippers with grabs, curtainsiders and boxes, and even flatbeds with a crane. New truck buyers base their choice of engine an what they will use the truck for, but expect the 215hp to be more readily available in the used market. While the nine-speed transmission is standard on the 235hp some operators also specify it with the lower power rating.

"Pricing a used example is difficult because demand is high. With a sleeper cab the truck can do the job of a day-cab model, but not visa versa. Perhaps the most common will have curtain-sided bodywork; expect to pay about 117,550 for an early example. With a day cab it will be about £1,000 less."
