A New Fordson 3-tormer with Normal Control, Interesting 2-ton Mechanical Horse Outfit and a, Widely Varied Display of Vehicles for All Purposes

AN exhibit of outstanding interest at the Ford Motor Exhibition which opened yesterday at the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gore, London, W.7, and remains open until Saturday. October 26, is the new 3-tonner which is fully described elsewhere in this issue. Available in two lengths of wheelbase, this model is shown with a drop-sided lorry body and with a three-way hydraulic tipping body.

Further new models that are being shown to the public for the first time include the intbresting Ford Tug mechanical-horse unit which is designed to deal with loads up to two tons, the new Fordson normal-control 2-tonner, and Ford eight-cylindered 15-cwt. van.

With regard to the Tug model, this is shown with the standard two-wheeled trailer, also with a four-wheeled trailer. Providing good manceuvrability, the Tug is powered by the four-cylindered 8 h.p. engine, and a comfortable cab is provided for the driver.

On the main floor there are also examples of the Ford 5-cwt. van, the Fordson ,I-ton lorry and van, and the 2-ton forward-control lorry.

Six-wheelers are represented by the Fordson-Sussex chassis in which the power is transmitted to all four wheels of the bogie, and the Fordson-Surrey with trailing rear wheels. Both these models are for 4i-ton pay-loads. -With the exception of the new 3-tonner, the Ford and Fordson 1936 range of corn 828 mercial vehicles was fully described in our issue dated September 27.

Exhibits of particular interest are sectioned examples of the new 3-ton chassis and the Fordson 2-ton forward control chassis. In both cases the chassis are cut away to show the improved design features, and are operated by electric drive so that the action of the moving parts may be studied.

A variety of Fordson tractors may also be seen, including the agricultural tractor with spade lugs on one wheel and cleats on the other to show alternative equipment, the Fordson land utility tractor with Firestone pneumatic tyre on one wheel and Dunlop low-pressure tyre on the other, and the Fordson industrial tractor.

An ambulance completes the range of commercial vehicles exhibited by the Ford concern. Mounted on the special Ford V-8 ambulance chassis, the body is fitted for two stretcher cases, one sitting patient and an attendant. Complete equipment is provided and every detail is of high quality.

In the section representing the wide range of industrial power units manufactured by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., items of outstanding interest include the Drysdale trailer fire-pump, which has a capacity of 250 to 500 g.p.m. and is powered by the Ford 24 four-cylindered engine. This exhibit is shown by John Kerr and Co. (Manchester), Ltd., London Road, Northwich.

Thomas W. Ward, Ltd., Albion Works, Saville Street, Sheffield, is showing an exan-iple of its Forward industrial truck, which has as its power unit the Ford 8 h.p. engine, and H. Pattisson and Co., Ltd., Stinmore, Middlesex, is responsible for a range• of golf and sports ground traCtors, lights

estate tractors and motor rollers, all powered by Ford engines.

Amongst the numerous exhibits of body-building concerns and Ford agents and dealers is a striking 26seater forward-control de luxe coach shown by Harold J. Willett, Ltd., -high Street, Colchester. The body is luxuriously fitted and is upholstered in a warm shade of terra cotta leather and moquette; with Dunlopillo..seat squabs ; embodying the Ford V-8 forwardcontrol chassis, this coach, which has a sliding 'roof, conforms in every detail to;: m_unstry of Transport requirements Wallace Carr. and Co., Ltd., 43, Acre Lane, London, S.W.2, is showing the new Lawson Overtype Luton body mounted on the Fordson 2-ton forwardcontrol chassis, to which is fitted a middle extension. This van provides exceptionally large loading space for the transport of bulky, light goods, the total capacity being 1,040 cubic ft. Despite the large space available, the weight has been k-ept low, and the complete vehicle weighs under 21 tons. The length behind the driver's seat is 15 ft. 6 ins.

A useful dual-purpose body mounted on the Ford 8 h.p. chassis is shown by Allan Taylor and Co., 126-128, High Street, Wandsworth, S.'W.18. This body should be of particular interest to commercial travellers, it being a smart attachment for he small de luxe touring car. It is quickly fitted by four simple clips, two at the rear and one on each side, and when in position gives the touring cat body the appearance of a coupe de vile. The attachment is made largely of-aluminium and is, therefore, light and easily handled. An attractive van of _streamlined design, having as its basis a forwardcontroledition of the Ford 5-cwt. chassis, is being shown by W. Harold Perry, Ltd., " Invicta • Works: North FincibleY, London, N.2.. . For market gardeners, a special body by Arthur K. Gould, Ltd., 299-292, 'Regent" Street, London, W,1, will be of interest, This is mounted on the Fordson 2-ton forward-control short-wheelbase chassis.

Tipping gears are represented by the Anthony hydraulic gear which is shown mounted on a Fordson 2-ton chassis.

Special features of this gear are that it is pipeless, thus eliminating leakage ticl pressure troubles, and it includes wt) check valves which make it impos:ible for the body to drop back. An automatic shaking device is provided, which operates only at the fully tipped position, and the universal mounting provides for re-mounting of the body on a new chassis when required. Anthony Hoists, Ltd., Minerva Road, Park Royal, London, N.W.10, is the manufacturer of this gear. Outside the Ilan, A. Ferraris, Ltd., The Broadway, Cricklewood, is demonstrating a new Fordson 2-ton normal-control chassis with a Ferraris drop-sided lorry body and equipped with the Anthony tipping gear. The main features of the bodywork include a t,ie bar which prevents any sagging of the body sides, quick-release tail-board fixing and specially designed slotted corner posts.

Another model which is to be seen outside the hall is a Fordson forwardcontrol chassis with a Pullmore extension, giving a body space up to 14 ft. Ii ins., with an unladen weight of under 21 tons. A new torque cross-member and extensions to the frame sidemembers are fitted. A longer propeller shaft is also used. The price of the extension is moderate, and it enables a body of 900 to 1,000 cubic-ft. capacity to be used. The concern exhibiting this model is Pullmore Sixwheelers, Ltd., The Broadway, Cricklewood, London, N.W.2.

Equipment for the Fordson tractor is shown by Stanhay, Ltd., 15, Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, which concern is showing the Stanhay con version of the Fordson tractor designed specially for use in hopfields arid di:chards. This conversion, which is widely used, has a track of 4 ft., low overall height and a turning radius of Oft. Further exhibits of this concern include the Elwick wheelless cultivator and a "cleat wheel with 7-in. finFers.

The Eclipse cultivator for • use with the Fordson tractor is shown by E. V. Twose, Halberton, Devon, and Miller Wheels, Ltd., Chelsfield, Kent, is exhibiting its cultivator unit for use with the Fordson tractor.

The row-crop high-clearance Fordson conversion outfit manufactured by Stanhay, Ltd., Elwick Works, Ashford, Kent, may be seen in one of the vestibules, and in the second vestibule there is shown an example of the rotary cultivator made by Rotary Cultivators, Ltd., 32, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1.

Of considerable general interest are the exhibits displaying the facilities offered by the Ford concern, and the visitor may see demonstrations of some of the remarkable scientific measuring instruments used at the Ford Works, Dagenham. Demonstrations of Ford service facilities are also given.

The Ford engine-exchange plan is being demonstrated, the display illustrating the rebuilding process step by step.

New and interesting films are shown in the cinema hall, and the Show, which provides much of interest to commercial-vehicle users, will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Admission is 1s. 3d.
