A Specially Equipped Carrimore Trailer Drawn by a Gardnerengined E.R.F.

Tractor Chassis

CO-OPERATION between E. R, Foden and Son (E.R.F., Ltd.), Sun Works, Sandbach, and Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd., Great North Road, London, W.12, has resulted in the production of a-specially equipped tractor

trailer unit for the transport of large cable drums and heavy machinery. The platform of the trailer is low amidships and mounted above the turntable is a detachable double-purpose crab-winch and a removable bolster.

The tractor unit is substantially the E.R.F. C.I.5-model tipping chassis, with the Carrimore turntable installed above the rear axle. The tractor wheel base is 10 ft. 9 ins., with a 0-ft. 3-in. front track and 5-ft. 5-in. rear track. The power-unit is the Gardner L.W. live-cylindered oil engine.

The braking system is particularly. interesting, for in addition to fourwheel brakes on the tractor chassis

brakes are fitted to all four wheels of the trailer bogie. The brake drums on the tractor are 17 ins, in diameter, the front shoes being 3 ins, wide, whilst the rear shoes are 6 ins. wide; 16-in. diameter drums are fitted to the four wheels ,of the trailer..

A combined Dewandre vacuum servo and a LOCkheedhydraulie master cylinder are installed. on the off side of the chassis behind the pedal, the necessary depression for servo assistance being created by an exhauster and a vacuum tanii. The brakes on the bogie are also applied by the pedal, two booster cylinders being coupled to the main vacuum line, 'so that simultaneous

application of the brakes is assured. There are two hand levers—one for mechanical application of the shoes on the rear wheels of the tractor, whilst -the other lever applies (mechanically) the trailer brakes.

The hitch incorporates an hydraulic lifting ram to free the sliding parts of the turntable before withdrawing the tractor, whilst a pair of " elephant feet," also hydraulically operated, support the trailer when it is detached. The hydraulic pump for operating the lifting ram and the feet is built into the chassis immediately behind the cab.

The Carrimore trailer has a raised platform (9 ft. 9 ins, long) at the

front, where it overlaps the tractor chassis. The remaining part of the platform, covering a length of 15 ft.

ins., is but 1 ft. 10 ins, above the ground. A width of 7 ft. 1 in. is maintained throughout, except between the rectangular wheel-arches, whem the width is 4 ft. 5 ins.

Along the sides and at the rear of the platform are stout bars, which are framed to accept loading ramps. Firestone 36-in, by 8-in. tyres are fitted all round, singles beingused for the front wheels and the trailer bogie, whilst twins are used on the driving axle of the tractor. The wheelbase of the attachment is 10 ft.. 3 ins.
