That A and B licences should not be granted to the same operator, was the opinion expressed recently by Sir IIenry Piggott, C.B., C.I3.E., SouthEastern Licensing Authority.

It was not the intention of the 1933 Act, he said, that A and B licences should be held by one operator, unless the haulage business was carried on separately from other trade. It followed that applications by holders of B licences to have vehicles transferred to the A-licence class would be granted only in exceptional cases.

Need for More Fire-brigade Co-ordination, How urgent is the need for coordination in fire-fighting forces was stressed by Supt. W. E. Greenbalgh, chief officer of Bury Fire Brigade, in an address at Bury. He said:—

" It is quite understandable that local authorities which maintain good brigades and modern appliances— Bury, for example—should adopt a reasonable objection to sending their brigades, and, of course, their appliances, into other districts, the authorities in which, for reasons of economy, have neglected their services. In some parts of the country the provisions made for the protection of life and property from the ravages of fire leave much to be desired."

From a reader comes a comprehensive mathematical analysis of the loads, speeds, etc., that exist in four-speed epicyclic gears of the type now employed in certain automobiles. It represents a lighly technical and elaborate study of the problems that arise in designing gears of this description, and might have considerable value to the technical staffs of manufacturing concerns. We will gladly put any person interested in the analysis in touch with the author.
