• The prospect of private companies escorting abnormal loads within months on Britain's roads emerged this week as police talks with the Home Office continued.
Loads of 100-150 tonnes on motorways and dual-carriageway link roads are expected to be the first for privatisation, but the standards for driver training and escort vehicle specification are still under discussion.
An Association of Chief Police Officers spokesman said the switch from police to the private sector could start in the second half of next year. But he added: 'We don't want to rush this, You can't have someone with a Land Rover and a blue light just bobbing along behind,"
