Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Workers in the haulage industry and other sectors were last week urged to push harder for their redundancy rights following an industrial tribunal ruling that brought victory to thousands of ex-Leyland Daf workers.

The ruling by the Manchester industrial tribunal said the behaviour of Leyland Daf and receiver Arthur Anderson towards the manufacturer's 2,400 employees was unlawful because of the lack of consultation with the unions over the redundancies.

In theory the workers are now owed £10 million, but because of the company's collapse they will only be able to claim a smaller amount from the Government, estimated at a maximum of Urn.

The unions lawyer Michael Short says the victory highlights how far even the largest organisations will go to flout the law and warns workers to be on their guard over redundancies.
