• A plan by Wakefield City Council to charge operators of high-sided vehicles £20 for route clearance has been attacked as illegal by the Freight Transport Association, The association has called on the Department of Transport for help, saying it does not believe the Metropolitan District Council has the power to make the charge.
The change results from legislation likely to be introduced this January to reduce bridge bashing. Operators must notify highway authorities in advance if a vehicle more than 4.88 metres high is to be used on their roads. Wakefield is the only authority to charge, according to the FTA, which says: "The fear is that once one does it, they will all do it."
