SPECIAL vehicles which' can be used only on the authority of United Carriers, Ltd., stand idle or are being used for other purposes while alternative vehicles, some of which are unsuitable, are commissioned to carry frozen meat and fish from Hull.

This allegation was made before the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, at Bridlington, when Farnborough Transport, Ltd., Hull, applied for a licence for two vehicles to carry meat and fish as required within an unlimited area.

Mr. R. E. Paterson, for the applicants, said that a number of wholesalers had difficulty in obtaining transport for meat and frozen fish, in spite of the facilities which should have been made available through United Carriers. The trade now depended upon vehicles brought into Hull from outside. • A peculiar feature was the almost complete absence of Hays Wharf Cartage Lid.. Hull, vehicles.

Mr. Harold F. Dobson, director of Farnborough Transport, said that he was formerly employed by United Carriers. He knew that Hays Wharf vehicles could be used only under instructions by United Carriers, and asserted that the vehicles were not being fully employed. When questioned about their late arrival in Hull, Hays Wharf drivers said that they had been given only one or two hours' notice.

Mr. D. F. Broughton, in charge of the frozen-fish section of Jackson Mills, Ltd., Hull, said that there was difficulty in having frozen fish carried by United Carriers, the only hauliers available. Their service had been "shocking." Vehicles arrived late and loaders had to go on overtime pay.

Mr. Vincent Morgan, of Hays Wharf, Leeds, said that there were five vehicles available for United Carriers, but they had completed only 25 vehicle-days in the previous four weeks. Less than 24 hours' notice was often given by United Carriers. Vehicles were underemployed.

The hearing was adjourned. The Authority granted short-term licences for six months for two vehicles to he used within 30 miles.

" I intend to protect the wholesale fish merchants in Hull," the Authority affirmed
