A Feature which Hauliers Find Helpful in Estimating and Anticipating Chances JOT Obtaining Contracts TEEERE are two matters of general interest worthy of note by hauliers who are acquainted with the peculiarities of loads to and from the docks. One is of immediate moment ; there is a rush of deliveries of bacon and dairy produce from Denmark. The other is that brewers are expecting increases of business as the result of Mr. Roosevelt's success in the United States Presidential elections. The settlement of the cotton strike is bound to benefit conditions in Lancashire and Yorkshire.

North-east Coast.

It is reported that orders for sawn wood and pit props in Wgst Hartlepool are more numerous. Timber importers are sorting their new cargoes at the docks and dispatching them to customers. Much building is still in progress in this area.

In shipbuilding, Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., Wallsend, and R. and W. Hawthorn Leslie and Co., Flebburn, are making preparations for the building of two destroyers each for the Admiralty, whilst at Sunderland it is expected actual constructional work will begin soon on a 2,000-ton collier at Austin's yard.

The Sutton Dwelling Trust is inviting tenders for building 366 houses at Cleadon, South Shields, to plans by Mr. C. S. Errington, 21, Grainger Street, Newcastle. The L.N.E.R. proposes building bungalows in Wenlock Road, South Shields. Durham County Works Committee has passed a schednle of proposed road and bridge works involving an outlay of 18,500,000.

Yorkshire.

The cutlery manufacturers in Sheffield and district are experiencing considerable improvement in trade. Such things as safety razor blades, pocket knh Ss, butchers' knives and stainless cutlery are in demand. The news from Middlesbrough about the iron and steel industry is good. There is still keen demand for hosiery yarns from the Midlands.

A landing ground is to be laid at the Doncaster Aerodrome Over an area of 11 acres. Doncaster Town Council has accepted tenders from Fdcaster, Ltd., of Doncaster, and Knights (Contractors), Ltd., for work in connection with prevention of floods. A public elementary school, costing £19,000, is to be erected on the Marton Grove Estate by R. G. Tarran, Hyde Avenue, Hull, for the Middlesbrough Education Committee.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

The report from the building trade in this area is good. Lancashire County Council is to apply to the Ministry of Health for sanction to borrow in connection with the proposed infants' council school at Fleetwood.

Midlands.

Some of the lace and hosiery factories in Nottingham and elsewhere are busier. The electro-plate trade is active, also the glass trade, whilst the improvement in the boot and shoe trade of Northampton continues. The market for iron and steel, according to Birmingham reports, shows a more cheerful tone, and makers of jewellery and small metal ware in the Midlnnds are experiencing an improvement in trade.

Messrs. Ball and Robinson, Trent Bridge, Stoke-on-Trent, are to build 17 houses on the Heir housing site. McKeand, Smith and Co., Ltd., of Wednesbury, is to erect 46 houses on the Gum's Mill Road site. A new cinema is to be erected at the junction of London Road and Osmaston Road, Derby, whilst St. Peter's Collegiate School, Wolverhampton, is to be extended at a cost of 113,000. • Wales.

C. Brown and Co., 68, King's Road, Cardiff, is to erect 66 houses on the Tremorfa housing site. Widening of the entrance to the Bute Dry Dock, Cardiff, is to be carried out by Davies, Middleton and Davies, Ltd., 17, St. Andrew's Crescent, Cardiff. Mr. J. R. Evans, of 1, Morton Avenue, Gabalfa, Cardiff, is to build a timber-framed library at Grand Avenue, Ely, Cardiff. East Anglia.

The importing of timber at the docks at Yarmouth is brisk at present.

Scotland.

For the firs1 time since the commencement of these notes it is possible to report activity amongst Scottish tweed manufacturers. Hosiery and underwear manufacturers also are doing well. Three orders reached Clydebank shipbuilders during the last week.

West Country.

The timber trade in Bristol is good. Forty-eight houses are to be erected on the Lambrook site, the builders being Messrs. J. Standerwick and Sons, 138, Taunton Road, Bridgwater.

London and Home Counties. There is building activity to report. Mr. C. J. Hawkes, of Birchington, is to build eight houses at Bridge and eight at Wiekhambreux. On the Syon Estate, Chiswick, 140 houses are to be erected, the builder being Grosvenor Construction, Ltd. Hurtons, Ltd., 106, Regent Street, W.1, is to erect 32 houses at Moor Park Estate, Northwood, Middlesex. A dining hall, costing 11,408, is to be built at the-County High School, Clacton, by 0. Deaves, of Bures. H. Farrow, Ltd., of Golders Green, N.W., is to erect a building to house the generating plant for Barking Town Council. A. Groves and Sons, Ltd., of Milton-under-Wychwood, Oxford, is to build 142 houses and 30 bungalows on the Hurst Housing Estate, Swindon.
