Welsh Coal Trade Organizing Against Salter Recommendations.

A movement is afoot in South Wales to organize a joint protest against the Salter recommendations with regard to steam vehicles, by the South Wales Coal Owners, Factors, the Miners Federation and the municipal authorities of important Welsh coal-producing areas.

Mr. Finlay A. Gibson, secretary of the South Wales Coal Owners Association, is calling attention to the difficulties erwrienced by steam-vehicle owners owing to the low speed limits, heavy penalties for offences, and the existing repressive taxation.

It has to be remembered that, so far as the coal trade is concerned, if restrictions on the use of steam wagons led to freight going back to the rail, no great loss would be sustained. It would mean the transfer of coal supply to the railways. What the trade is emphasizing is that road transport cannot be restricted or killed, but will continue even if the type of vehicle has to be changed.

Producer Gas for Overseas Users.

Economies in fuel become more and more necessary as the price a the staple. commodity rises. So far as the majority of overseas countries is concerned, almost any alternative to petrol appears

to offer pecuniary advantages, and this is particularly the case in localities many miles from a seaboard.

This lends interest to the enterprise of the Producer Gas Plant Co., of 62, Conduit Street, London, W.1, which is now perfecting arrangements for the world distribution of its appliances.

The plants are designed to make gas from charcoal, a substance which is readily obtainable almost anywhere.

The cost of operation of these plants is such that a saving of 75-85 per cent. is said to be obtainable as compared with petrol. An alternative and more easily comparable figure is the equivalent price of petrol ; the cost is equivalent to that which would obtain were petrol procurable at 3d. per gallon.

The complete equipment includes a new cylinder head, which raises the compression pressure so that the gas is used most economically. The cost of the plant varies from £75 for a 1-ton vehicle to E110 for a 4-5-tonner. These prices are f.o.b., London.
