G("load for Bryan Jarvis he says it's time to call a halt to claim and counter claim regarding ultimate tipper stability.

There is a point at which the centre of gravity falls outside the vehicle envelope no matter how effective or how stiff the stabilising mechanism and nothing will stop it from going over.

Long ago, Fruehauf came to the conclusion that while it was a good thing to provide a tipper to operators which was as safe as we could reasonably make, it was not reasonable to publicise our efforts in such a way that might cause over confidence when tipping.

And during all our tests, we always had the critical components strain gauged in such a way that we could stop the test at any point, because we were aware that material failure would be the prime cause of overturning.

Mr Jarvis does well to illustrate the point that stability is not achieved by simply adding a feature. In this case it was the ram arrangement. A safer tipper can only be arrived at by a marriage of knowledgeable partners—the chassis, the body and the ram gear.

Fruehauf is wholeheartedly behind the IRTE standard, but if anybody asks we simply say "yes, we conform and we can show you the proof on paper and on photographs if you wish".

Similarly with the "CE" marking on tippers. Any supplier who CE marks his product will have to consider the stability factor. But as we have to "CE" mark, how can this be a selling feature, as seemed to be the case at TipCon this year?
