Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Mercedes-Benz 3234 is fitted with a turbocharged, intercooled 11-litre vee-six engine producing 340hp at 1,900rpm with an offset crankshaft to aid running smoothness. This motor was developed to replace the previous naturally aspirated vee-eight that was thirstier, more sluggish and heavier.

The advances made, together with the introduction of Bosch RQV fuel injection, ensure better performance and that the engine meets Euroq emission standards. No electronic engine management is fitted but there is a flame start device to improve cold weather starting. Automatic chassis lube using a soft grease system is included and there is a live engine PTO which is particularly useful for any refuse-related applications.

Other changes include larger brakes, a Mercedes-Benz 16-speed splitter gearbox (with air-assisted shift) and a redesigned cab. The steering wheel is smaller and a new flexible diagnostics system (FDS) traces faults in any of the vehicle's electrical circuits. A display in the centre of the dash presents a series of codes.

We found a 3234 with state-of-the-art waste compactor body for our inspection at MercedesBenz dealer S&B Commercials of Hatfield.

Inside the cab there are two mechanical locks, one on each side, and both must be released before the cab can be tilted. These lock on to the tops of the shock absorbers/cab mountings and are easy to overlook if you are unfamiliar with the vehicle. Operating the main tilt pump without releasing the cab locks first is likely to burst the hydraulic pipe.

20n this particular application the compactor ram has a grease nipple at its base which is not included in the automatic chassis lubrication system. It is vital that this should not be overlooked however awkward it may seem to reach. It must be greased regularly. Neglect will prove expensive as replacement rams of this size cost several thousand pounds.

3 It is always worth check

ing the bracket which secures and supports the turbocharger to intercooler induction trunking on top of the engine. Although fitted with a lock nut, it can still vibrate loose and lead to unnecessary chafing. No serious damage will be done.
