Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I (astral is offering a guarantee against failure to lubricate an engine properly with its recently launched Syntruck synthetic oil, which conforms to European S1-IPD standards. The warranty is for 1 m km/48 months on new vehicles and 750,000km/ 36 months on vehicles under three years old. The conditions include maintaining a lubrication and maintenance log. It must also be used in accordance with the manufacturers' warranty, "...including but not limited to all instructions related to oil changes, services etc."

Apart from extended drain intervals, Castrol claims that Syntruck offers maximum wear protection, increased mechanical efficiency, reduced exhaust emissions and easier cold starting. UK field trials have been carried out with two MercedesBenz 1838 tractors operated by Northern Foods and with crash tenders at Birmingham Airport. The Mercedes have shown better fuel consumption—up to

4.0% on trunking routes. The crash tenders have offered improved performance and extended engine rebuild intervals.

Extending oil change intervals can lead to problems with vehicle manufacturers' warranties. A spokesman for lveco Ford Truck says: "Extending the drain interval will invalidate the warranty. We see this oil being more suited to vehicles out of warranty."

Mercedes, which already specifies 45,000km oil drain intervals, says: "The oil is approved but operators must stick to our drain intervals to validate the warranty".

Scania's aftersales director Paul Hirons is concerned about the effect on maintenance: "I would worry that extending drain intervals may encourage some operators to extend their general maintenance intervals. Extending drain intervals would not automatically invalidate our warranty, but we would be inclined to look more closely at the vehicle."

Syntruck was launched in Germany two years ago. It costs £4.79 per litre compared with E1.78 for Castrol's longdrain mineral oil.
