• London should have 60 square miles of lorry parks by the end of next year. This was the target set by the GLC in June last year.
But at present, only two local authorities have taken the initiative. About half a square mile of park is provided in Tower Hamlets and two lorry parks are in operation at Haringey, where they banned lorries from residential streets last November.
A GLC spokesman commented: "The trouble is every authority wants to ban lorries from their streets, but few want to provide alternative places to park."
At present, he said, the GLC was negotiating with authorities in an area bordered by the North Circular Road and the Thames, and talking with councils about Fulham and parts of the Elephant and Castle.
Enfield Council has already agreed in principle to ban lorries from its streets.
