NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE COUNCIL.—A letter was read from. the R.A.C. enclosing draft scheme for the formation of a National Automobile Council and

asking the C.M.U.A. to nominate two delegates to discuss various points at a meeting to be held at the R.A.C. Capt. R. K. Bagnall-Wild and Mr. E. Shrapnell Smith were appointed delegates, and it was resolved that the scheme be circulated to the members of the committee. and considered at the next meeting. The committee viewed with pleasure the decision to extend an invitation to the London Omnibus Owners' Federation to be represented on the Council.

TRAFFIC OBSTRUCTION.—Colonel Crompton reported that the deputation from the C.M.U.A. to Sir Edward Henry on the question of keeping slowmoving traffic to the left of the roadway had been well received, and that Sir Edward had stated that he would approve of special notices being put up at refuges, and would instruct his constables, as an experiment, in the Kensington High Road, to direct traffic by sign to the left. It was resolved: "That a number of enamel plates bearing the words 'Drive near left kerb' should be prepared, to be placed on certain street refuges, and that authority be given to thv Finance Committee to expend a sum up to 15 on the matter." "That a letter be forwarded to the members of the Association asking for their co-operation, and that details be referred to the Public Carriage and Traffic Committee." LEGAL.—A letter was read from Messrs. Viney and Co., of Preston, respecting the attitude of the Bolton authorities towards heavy motor traffic, and suggesting that the C.M.U.A. should appoint some respon

sible person to collect evidence on the subject of convictions, so that the matter be brought up in Parliament. Resolved that a list of convictions should be • obtained from Messrs. Viney in first instance.

The correspondence with the Maypole Dairy Co., Ltd., of Glossop, in which a driver had been summoned for leaving his Foden steam wagon with steam up unattended, was reported. The Bench had held that the vehicle was not only a heavy motorcar but also a locomotive, and had convicted. The R.A.C. thought that this was a case where application should be made to the High Court to quash the conviction, and Messrs. Foden, the makers of the vehicle, had promised to contribute the sum of 10 guineas towards the costs. Resolved that, subject to the Maypole Dairy Co. contributing a further 10 guineas, the case should be proceeded with—up to a maximum expenditure of EN by the Association.

FINANCE.—The April financial statement, showing a bank balance of £341 16s. 10d. and £200 on deposit., was received. Cheques were signed.
