No. 29,370 : Dated June 15, 19o4.—A. De Dion and G. Bouton, France.—This clutch comprises a disc A carried by the driven shaft B and opposed to a disc C fast on the engine shaft D. Secured to the Disc C but opposed to the opposite face of the disc A is an annular member Cl carried by pins C2 and free to be ad vanced against disc A. The annular member CI is normally retained in its advanced position by levers controlled by spring F. When the member CI is advanced the disc A is carried forward by it against the disc C, so that it becomes clutched between the two faces of the members C Cl. The clutch is freed by an opposite movement, imparted by suitable operating mechanism.

No. ro,697 Dated May 9th, 1904.—G. and H. P. Dillig, U.S.A.—This differential gear is mounted on a divided driving axle .AA1, the two parts being eon to the axle. The sprocket wheel carries a lug B1, which projects through an orifice C1 in the casing C, but the orifice is larger than the lug, so that the sprocket wheel is free to rotate partially relatively to the casing. Each of the axle portions carry toothed wheels DDI, and pivoted to the casing are rocking pawls EE1. Each pawl has a lug E2, and a rod El connects these lugs to the lug BI of the sprocket wheel. When driving in one direction the sprocket wheel first advances round the casing, and by its connection with the pawls rocks these so that they engage the toothed wheels DDI, as indicated in dotted lines (Fig. a). For rearward driving the action is reversed, the other ends of the pawls coming into operation; but it will be seen that, when turning a corner, one portion of the shaft is free to overrun the other, as each end of each pawl only prevents movement of its respective wheel D or DI in one direction.

No. 10,683: Dated May g, 1904.— Clutch. E. W. Bliss Company, Brooklyn, U.S..A.—A driven shaft carries a suit. able fly-wheel 2, which constitutes a driving member. The shaft t is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 3, and the fly-wheel with a corresponding longitudinal groove 4. Located in the said grooves is a movable key 5, having a projection 6 extending at an angle from the key. Carried by the driven member is a sleeve 7 having a spring seated pin 8, which normally tends to keep the key 5 in a position where it will engage both with the grooves 3 and 4.. On the said sleeve 7 is a tripping member 9. Connected with the usual treadle is a rod so carrying a tripping lever it, provided with an open recess or shoulder in which a pin 12 engages, the lever being capable of turning on the pin i2 as a pivot in such a manner that it can be adjusted so as to be in the path or out of the path of the tripping member 9. The pin 12 is carried by a stop 13, pivoted at 20, on the bracket 19, adapted to be in the path or out of the path of the projection 6, and when in. the path of the same, to counteract the effect of a spring seated pin 8, and turn the key 5 out of the groove 4 in the flywheel, and entirely into the groove of the shaft. When the tripping member .9 strikes against the lever it, this lever is forced off the pin 12, and so releases the stop 13. The top consequently moves into the path of the projection 6, resulting in movement of the key 5 entirely into the groove of the shaft 1, so that the driving and driven members are disconnected. By allowing the pedal to rise and again depressing it, the lever xi will move the stop 13 out of the path of the projection 6, thereby allowing the spring seated member 8 to return the key 5 into the groove of the fly-wheel 2, so that driving connection is again established.

The jack comprises two levers (A) pivoted to a nut (B). The nut is carried by a spindle (C) having a left-hand screw thread at one end and a right-hand screw thread at the other. The spindle also carries a nut (.D) provided with grooved rollers (Di), which bear against the sides of the levers (A). As the spindle is rotated the nuts (13 and D) are drawn together or forced apart according to the direction of rotation, resulting in an outward or inward movement of the levers. It will be seen that this construction provides the jack with a very large range of action.
