Parcels are sorted in the onginal hub in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and a newer fadity, near Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and trunked overnight to the 19 depots for delivery by the couriers.
Hermes has made a substantial investment in its Nuneaton nub, which it took over from Lynx. The centre features two straight-line
posi-sorters that have been fitted with advanced 3D camera scanners to maximise the speed and accuracy of the bar code reads on the parcels as they fly through the machines at 5,000 per hour.
For most larger retailers, Hermes uses its fleet of 169 tractor units and 461 trailers to collect parcels from customers' warehouses
for delivery to the hubs. Once sorted, the parcels are delivered by the artics either to the regional depots, smaller sub-depots or direct to couriers' homes.
Each courier has a defined territory based on postcodes to cover between typical working hours of 7am to fipm, although most rounds are completed in two to four hours.
