Capping green grants is a mistake, says the EIC. Jennifer Ball reports.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL Industries Commission (EIC) has slammed the government's cap on green truck grants. claiming it will jeopardise the UK's obligations to meet EU air quality standards.

Last week the government announced that funding would remain stable at £26m, but it will introduce a new system of grants, which will see some operators facing a 30% reduction in grants to clean up their fleet (CM 11 March).

ETC. which represents companies that develop pollution control technologies, says it will continue its drive for increased funding for the Energy Saving Trust, which runs the PowerShift and CleanUp grant programmes. More than 30 MPs have already signed an 'Early Day Motion' in the House of Commons backing its campaign.

The EIC director Merlin Hyman says: -CleanUp has been at reducing harmful for Britain's ageing fleet of trucks and vans; many of which are used for long hours in heavily populated areas.

-The programme is a significant part of the UK's efforts to comply with its obligations under EU air quality legislation it should be extended, not cut." a success emissions
