EEC decibels NEGOTIATIONS in the EEC to cut permitted noise levels on heavy lorries are almost complete, Transport Minister William Rodgers said in the Commons.

He told Geoffrey Rippon (Tory, Hexham) that he hoped agreement on new limits, which would apply from 1980 and 1982 would also carry commitment to seek further reductions.

Prescribed limits on diesel smoke emission were adequate, but the Government was working with manufacturers and operators to improve maintenance and inspection procedures.

Profits rise

ANNOUNCING an interim dividend of 1.55p per share for the six months ended December 31, 1976, last week, Mitchell Cotts Transport Ltd reported that profit, before. taxation had increased to £403,000 compared with £384,000 in the first half of last year.

The company expected that profits would continue at least at that level during the second six months to June 30, 1977.

Walkers join TA

WALKERS of Wakefield Ltd, a 12-vehicle operator mainly concerned with van traffic, joined the Transport Association last week. The company is one of the smallest to join the TA, an independent organisation of road hauliers who help each other with return loads, reciprocal maintenance, etc.

The membership of the Transport Association, all members of which are in the Road Haulage Association, now stands at 90 companies.

At the March meeting of the Transport Association, concern was expressed at the escalation of tyre prices. There were proposals that the Price Commission should be asked to investigate the high price of commercial vehicle tyres.
