Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N the House of Commons last week the President of the Board of Trade. was asked to press for the inclusion of cars and commercial vehicles in new or renewed trade agreementS with countries

Which discriminate against British vehicles by means of currency restric-: firms. This is a niatter, the importance of which was urged by :" The 'Commercial Motor" as long ago as June 25, _1948.

The President replied that he would continue to arrange that the Position of motor manufacturers in relation to exports was fully borne in mind during' hi-lateral trade negotiations. AMPHIBIOUS CARRIERS TO HAUL SLEDGES

UNUSUAL methods are being used at -"Loch Cuithir, in Skye, to bring out diatomite, pending the building of a new road to the deposits. This valuable material is -being mined by Scottish Diatomite, Ltd., which has had to contbat the difficulty of transport over bogs,.

This problem has been solved by the use of converted U.S. aniphibious carriers on tracks. These carry about 11 tons of diatomite from the workings to the main road. some three miles distant.

To step up output, the company has considered the use of trailers. These would normally be unsuitable for work over bog and hillside,-but adapting them as sledges, the company believes that

the problem of bogging down can be avoided and a load of some 3 tons brought out on each trailer-Sledge. Tests already made have shown that the trailers will not bog easily.

" TN an industrial istabliShinent,'. the

, Mr. C. E. Jordan, national chairman Of the Industrial Transport Association and transport controller,Tube Investments (Group Services), Ltd., Birmingham, made this comment in an address on "Training and Education of Industrial Transport -Personnel." whieh he gave to the Liverpool branch of the Association, last week.

" In the course of the industrial trans port manager's control of transport, from beginning to end he will require -. to be an expert on transport law, rail and road, an automobile engineer, a discriminating buyer, an efficient administrator, a Man of resource and capable of making quick but balanced judgments, and a controller of labour,' said Mr. Jordan.

"There are not many men who

possess all these qualifications. The efficient administrator is not always' a first-class engineer and vice .versa. In these matters the head of an industrial' transport department stands or falls on. his power of discernment irt the choice; of personnel.
