MR. J. A. WILLIAMS, of British Railways, the Institute of Transport Silver Jubilee Scholar for 1949, has left for America on a study tour, under the terms of the scholarship.

MAYALL, who has been associated with the sales side of Blakes Motors, Ltd., Manchester, for 20 years, and has been connected with the motor industry for some 31 years, has been appointed managing director. The company has been a Bedford main dealer since vehicles of that make were first produced.

MR. A. F. PALMER PHILLIPS has joined the board of the Braid Group, Ltd., together with its principal trading subsidiaries, Garlick, Burrell and Edwards, Ltd., and the Chester Engineering Co., Ltd. As announced in "The Commercial Motor" last week, he has become a director also of Lawson Pigott Motors, Ltd.

MR. HAROLD ELEY, general advertising Manager of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., was the guest of honour at a luncheon given, to mark his retirement after 36 years' service, by the London Publicity Club. Representatives of 14 advertising organizations made ohominute speeches in appreciation of his work, and lie received a presentation from MR. LEON GOODMAN, chairman.

MR. THOMAS GRAY,' Minst.T.. has been confirmed in his appointment as deputy manager of Edinburgh Transport Department. He has been with the department since 1919, and has been principal assistant since 1935. He has been honorary treasurer of the Scottish • section of the Institute of Transport for the past 10 year, is well known as honorary secretary of the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association, and area secretary of the Municipal Passenger -Transport Association. He is also a member of the National Standing Joint Committee on Road Transport Education.

Ma. W. M. Scciiv, formerly manager of Silent Transport, Ltd.. Woking, will be sailing this month to South Africa, where he is to join MR. D. G. SUTHERS, who is concessjonnaire for Q electric vehicles in that Country.

MR C. W. H. SPARROW has unanimously been re-elected chairman of the Metropolitan area of the road Haulage ASSOCiaIi011. MR. H. H. GROW and MR. ERIC R. TAYLOR, the two vicechairmen, have also been re-appointed.

Mr. F. A. Welts has been appointed chairman of the Bristol branch of the Industrial Transport Association. MR. A. G. COVE, J.P., has been elected vicechairman, MR. F. J. WILDING secretary, and MR. G. R. HOWELL assistant secretary and treasurer.

MR. S. GOUGH has been service manager of Guy Motors, lid., for nearly five years; and has helped to build up for the ccimpany a fine reputation in ibis connection. Our recent mention of another member of the industry as formerly service manager of the company, referred to a period before Mr. Gough took over this responsibility. A LD. A. H. G LED/11 LL, who when chairman of Halifax Passenger Transport Committee played a leading part in the development of the motorbus services, will retire front municipal life in May, after nearly 26 years' service.

MR. C. 0. T. PURCELL, assistant engineer of the Eastern National Omnibus Col; Ltd., has been appOinted chief engineer of City Of Oxford Motor Services, Ltd., as from April 1, He entered transport through the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd., and before joining " Eastern National" was with United Autornobile Services, Ltd., for 20 years. Mr. Purcell succeeds MR. F. A. MAsoN,-whO has become chief engineer of the Western Welsh Omnibus Co.., Ltd.

MR. W. W. WALTON, MINST.T., last Saturday retired from his position as director of Walton's Carriers, Ltd., Stockton-on-Tees. His company is about to be transferred to the British Transport Commission. Mr. Walton has spent 62 years of his 76 years in the transport industry, and started his Own business in 1912. He has devoted a great deal of time to the interests of the industry and to public Work. He was a vice-president of Associated • Road Operators from 1936-1941, and firs! chairman of the South Durham and North Yorks Centre of the National Association of Furniture Warehousemen and Removers.. For 10 yetts was chairman of the Northern Area of the Road Haulage Association, MR. REGINALD E. BRITTON, who, as a result of the acquisition of his longdistance road haulage interests by the British Transport Commission, has retired from the chairmanship of the Road Haulage Association's Yorkshire (Hull) Area, was recently guest of honour at a farewell dinner. A presentation was made by MR. T. SPENCER. Mr. Britton was chairman of Hull Sub-area of Associated Road Xlperators from 1936 until the Hull Joint Organization of A.R.O. and the C.M.U.A. vvas established in 1940. He then became its vice-chairman. He was chairman of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O. for two years.
