Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

sleeping partner in my son's owner-driver business. We decided to cease trading as it was no longer making economic sense.

But in winding up the business our footsteps have been dogged at every turn by the Inland Revenue. It took a long time to convince the IR that I had made no profit nor taken any income from the business, as I was just the CPC holder.

The IR has now hit us with another large bill including penalties and interest as it has disallowed all claims for travelling expenses over the past seven years.

In accordance with the 0licence the vehicle was always parked at the operating centre, where routine repairs were carried out at weekends. But the IR is claiming that, as the business address was also my son's home address, there was no travel involved: when he got up in the morning he was "at work".

It refuses to recognise that the vehicle had to be kept at the nominated operating centre and that the journey from home to there was travel in connection with the business.

The opinion of CMs readers would be very much appreciated.

R Rust, Basildon, Essex.
