casualties rose by 2% last year compared with 1996, according to new figures from the Department of Transport, but the number of people seriously injured fell by 3%. Fatalities remained at the same level.
Road traffic has grown by more than 50% since 1985, but the number of people killed on Britain's roads has fallen by more than 30% in that time, and serious injuries are down by 42%. However there is little room for complacency, with the level of slight injuries showing a 16% rise since 1985.
Another cause for concern is the number of fatalities on motorways and Aroads: they rose by 4% last year over the 1 996 level.
