Arthur Shipley was returning from Barcelona for Wakefieldbased Cresta Freight Services when he was arrested at the French border in Carcassone on 11 December (CM 8-14 Jan).

His distraught family say Shipley is coping well with the situation: they are now considering an appeal.

Shipley joins a growing number of British drivers who are languishing in foreign jails.

Earlier this year London driver Steffon Wapshott was sentenced to seven years in jail and fined £1.75m for smuggling 700kg of cannabis in his trailer (CM 5-11 Feb). Wapshott was arrested after a customs check at the French/Spanish border on 2 July after he collected a load including textiles and boots from Alicante in Spain. His appeal was rejected.

D Owner-driver Ron Beresford from Hemel Hempstead has been in prison near Alicante, Spain since being arrested in Valencia on suspicion of being a drug courier on 17 April. He is to be visited by his wife in the next fortnight.
