We record with regret the death of Trevor Thornton, managing director of Northern Ireland Carriers until his retirement in 1971.

Mr Thornton joined Pickfords in 1925 and held a number of appointments until he became area manager for the Isle of Wight in 1946. He served as divisional manager of the British Waterways Board and as assistant general manager before becoming managing director of British Roadrailer. He was invited to form Northern Ireland Carriers in 1965.

A former managing director of the National Freight Corporation, Mr G. W. Quick Smith paid tribute to Mr Thornton: "Few know the immensity of the difficulties he so cheerily surmounted — rescuing road haulage from a by then moribund UTA; breathing new life into people whose morale had sunk abysmally."
