Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Your editorial of June 4 gives me the opportunity to make two comments.

First, to confirm that, in Britain, we are extremely fortunate in the working relationship we have with the Administration. Of course, we do not always see eye to eye, but both the passenger transport and international divisions of the Department of the Environment are refreshingly aware of the practical needs of operators. It is pleasing to be able to acknowledge this publicly. It is also why we are worried about the "social" theories of the EEC Commission.

This leads to the second point: the need for the transport industry to work to influence EEC through the International Road Transport Union (1FIU) and similar bodies. This is very definitely the attitude of the PVOA. Like the RHA and ETA, we are very active members of IRU and support—not infrequently, initiate—moves by IRU to achieve practical solutions to international problems. I was gratified to see the references to PV0A included in your report of the recent IRU meetings, which substantiate this claim. DENIS QUIN, Director, Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association
