Conoco repeats team win

by Anthony O'Toole • Conoco Ltd, which first entered the Manchester LDoY round in 1970 and won the team award, repeated its team success on Sunday and also secured four additional prizes when A. Lee and L. Hyde were recorded winners of Classes B and D respectively, and W. Sheard and J. A. Doyle second and third in Classes F and H.

Three of these drivers: (Doyle, Hyde and Lee) incurred a total of 346 penalties to take the team award.

With only 74 points penalized against him, Mr Lee was also the driver to incur the lowest number of penalty points throughout the day. This was partially due to his knowledge of the Highway Code, in which test he lost only 25 'points. On the first and third manoeuvring tests he lost 24 and 20 points respectively, and on the road route forfeited only five penalty points. He lost no points whatsoever on the second manoeuvring test.

Overall driver of the day award went to J. S. Fleming of National Carriers, who completed the contest with a penalty of 94 points, of which 30 were lost on the Highway Code, 10 on the road route and a combined loss of 54 on the manoeuvring tests, not including the second in which he lost none.

With 97 drivers and 22 teams competing, the entry was slightly down on last year when 125 took part.

This year's contest was held at a new venue. Belle Vue Gardens. which although having a wider selection of facilities and amenities than the Shell Chemical Plant, Partington, where the contest has been previously held, did not offer room for a contest any larger than last weekend's.
