Brilliant 17-year-old

by Gordon Crabtree • Fleetwood is determined to encourage the young driver and two new awards made at its LDoY round on Sunday, which took place on the esplanade in front of the Town Hall, reflected this desire. Some brilliant driving by 17-year-old B. Raybould, from nearby Lytham St Anne's, in a BMC for Carrington and Dewhurst, the textile giants, won him a place of honour in Fleetwood centre annals for he carried off two gold statuettes, one for the most promising driver under 20 and the other for the best under 18. The trophies are to become a permanent feature and officials hope by this to bring in more and more young, keen drivers.

Everything went perfectly, except the weather, and a large crowd which included holidaymakers from Blackpool watched the event.

The Highway Code test again proved that drivers competing must improve their knowledge if they want to be in with a chance of a finals badge.

Overall winner of the contest with a penalty of only 130 points was J. Ainsworth from Blackburn who had 50 marks against him for the Highway Code questions. Team winners were Bridges Transport.
