Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Four months ahead of schedule, a further 10 miles of the London—South Wales Motorway (M4) between Tormarton in Gloucestershire and Stanton St Quintin in Wiltshire was opened to traffic on Tuesday. This length is the first stage in bridging the 78-mile gap between Tormarton and Holyport on the Maidenhead by-pass. The last section to be opened was that between Hambrook and Tormarton in December 1966.

It is hoped, says the DoE, that the whole length of the M4 will be opened by the end of this year, completing a 140-mile long continuous motorway link between London and Newport, Monmouthshire, via the Severn Bridge.

A further 18+ miles of the London-Basingstoke Motorway (M3), from Basingstoke (East) in Hampshire to Lightwater in Surrey, opens to traffic today. The first 9+ miles of the motorway, between Popham and Basingstoke (East), were opened last month. Work on the final 12+-mile section, between Lightwater and Sunbury Cross, started earlier this year, and is expected to be completed towards the end of 1973.
