All the Mechanism is Housed Within the Roll of this ,Striking New Model Made by an Old-established Company

PP'1)the Manumit is an interesting new motor roller of 12 cwt. or 1 ton weight, made by Marshall, Sons and Co., Ltd., Gainsborough. The engine and transmission are carried inside the roller add there is only one control, the single lever for the throttle mounted op the handle. When the last named is in the vertical position the friction-drive rollers are out of engagement, thus giving a neutral position; at the same time the brake is applied. Tile engine may also be used as a 'brake by closing the throttle and engaging the drive. Depression of the handle puts the friction drive into operation and the roller moves in the direction away from the operator. For the purpose of being towed the loose rollers may be removed and the handle can then be used as a horizontal drawbar.

A mild-steel roller shell is employed, the ends being of cast iron, bolted in place. The engine, reduction gear and driving mechanism are mounted on a cast

iron base, which is suspended from the axle, to which the handle is keyed. A Villiers two-stroke-cycle engine provides the power, which is 1i h.p. for the smaller machine and 3i h.p. for the larger. It is lubricated on the petroil system and cooled by a fan in a cowl.

A flexible coupling conveys the power to a worm gear mounted on ball bearings. On the slow-speed shaft is a friction wheel, which drives the drum through loose friction rollers carried on a rocker arm keyed to the axle. The reduction gear is lubricated •by oil in a sight tube.

A Villiers carburetter is arranged to provide the right mixtifre irrespective of the angle assumed by the engine. A cast-iron exhaust silencer is built into the baseplate.Starting is by a cord and pulley; the fuel tank is mounted above the worm gear. The engine can be removed from the roller shell in a few minutes if required, and a waterproof cover is provided to protect the mechanism.

In the ease of the 12-cwt. model the roller diameter is 2 ft. 7i 11.1S. approximately.

Speed can be varied between m.p.h. and 3 m.p.h.
