THE NEW director general fo transport at the EEC Commis sion in Brussels is John Steel4 British Civil Servant with wick experience of transport prob lems.
The Dutch (nacle a bid for ME job — which became vacant o'r the retirement of Raymond Le Goy — and put forward thE name of Mr De Man, Permanen Secretary in the Dutch Transpor and Waterways Ministry. Bu. Britain wanted to retain the jot and the Commission also fell that the post should not be giver to another country.
Mr Steele (age 52) was directly concerned with road transport policy in the 1960s when he was principal in the former Ministry of Transport anti Civil Aviation. He was later promoted deputy secretary in the Department of Trade with responsibility for shipping and aviation.
