York's export subsidiary, York Trailer International, is also based at Corby and is currently enjoying great success with export orders topping Elm per month—twice the 1980 level.

However, this has not been achieved simply by exporting trailers — in fact the reverse is true. Complete trailers are difficult to export because of their high freight cost relative to the cost of the trailer itself.

In other words they are too big to ship cheaply. In addition to this, many countries operate local tariffs which prevent the importation of complete vehicles at an economic price.

Local content has become the name of the game on the expo t market and York has been supplying design and manufacturing expertise to many countries, such as Kuwait, Malaysia and Portugal.

The total exports from York Trailer International are expected to reach about £9m in 1981.

Market Harborough in Leicestershire is the home of another York subsidiary, York Technical Services. As I mentioned earlier, York manufactures its own axles and Market Harborough is where they are made.

Apart from the conventional axles — which are often bought by York's competitors and fitted with "own brand" hubcaps — Market Harborough also builds the Dreadnought heavy duty tandem bogie for 20 and 40tonne operation.
