Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

,IEW distribution service for d manufacturers, started in th last week, is designed manufacturers in England I Southern Scotland with :ribution points north of nburgh, including the Highcis and Islands.

t uses a flat rate system of per cwt and, following a >t scheme, the operator, .efare Distributors Ltd, of athtay Street, Perth, claims t delays between the nufacturing point and the tribution point have been uced from six weeks to ee days. A spokesman for company told CM: "This, course, gives the retailer a ger period on which goods h a limited shelf life can be played."

lurefare claims that, because re is only one transhipment nt, pilferage is negligible. :he managing director, Mr Isdale, formerly transport manager with Pullars of Perth Ltd, and the chairman of the Scottish area of the FTA, said: "With the threat of the introduction of the eight-hour driving day next year it will become more than ever essential that transport schedules are adhered to.

"At the moment cash-andcarry warehouses and large multiple stores in the North of Scotland operate a very stringent booking-in system for vehicles. Any vehicle late for an appointment might well be delayed until the next day.

"We appreciate how difficult it must be for someone in the South of England to stick to the appointed time, but from Perth we know we can make it."

Surefare's vehicles are able to operate as far as Inverness and back to Perth within the eight-hour day. The area north of the Moray Firth and the Islands will require at least one night away from home.

The system operates on the basis of Surefare tailoring its operations to fit in with the customer's production and warehousing plans. It can trunk bulk consignments to its Perth warehouse either by road or Freightliner. On receipt of an inquiry Surefare will examine a potential customer's premises and methods and within two weeks can be ready to begin the tailor-made distribution service.

The El per cwt rate operates from the 6,000 sq ft warehouse in Perth and applies to packages whether they are carried within the city of Perth or to the most northerly point in the Western Islands.

Surefare is working towards a fleet of 10 vehicles each with a capacity of 10 to 12 pallets. They are to use boxvans for night delivery and side-loaders for day work.
