E Transport Arbitration Tribunal last week awarded 131,862 compensation to John Eastham and Sons, Ltd., Fox Street,. Bury, Lancs, and £25,000, compensation to Placketts Transport, Ltd., Wilsthorp Road, Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

The Tribunal also heard a legal argument which had arisen in the preparation of a case for the Court of Appeal in the case of Spillers Transport Services, Ltd., against the Road Haulage Executive. The company, now in liquidation, operated from Coronation Road, Southville, Bristol, 3, At a previous hearing, Spillers was granted £10,556 compensation, but the Road Haulage Executive appealed against this on a point of law dealing with the question of accountancy practice. 1952 SAFETY CONGRESS

APAPER entitled "Road Safety and the Vehicle" will be read by Dr. W. H. Glanville, director of the Road Research Laboratory, on the first day of this year's National Safety Congress, organized by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, which will be held in Central Hall, Westminster, S.W.1, from October 7-9.

Maj.-Gen. B. K. Young, directorgeneral of the R.S.P.A., will read a paper, "A Review of the Trends -of Road Safety," also on the first day, and on the second, Lord Latham, chairman of the London Transport Executive, will take the chair at a road-safety forum.

RAISING THE ROOF

THE roof of the Stoke garage of the Potteries Motor Traction Co., Ltd.. which weighed 150 tons, has been raised 1 ft. 6 ins., so that double-deck buses can be accommodated. Each side was elevated 6 ins, at a time. Dimensions of the roof are 210 ft. by 130 ft.

The garage was built in 1923 solely for single-deckers. It now affords 15 ft. headroom.

£32,063 TO COLLECT FARES

TH E complete cost to Nottingham Transport Department of trafficrevenue control amounted to £32,063 in the past financial year. The annual rental of the ticket-issuing machines was £3,387. There were 43 inspectors and 14 traffic regulators.

POLISH PROGRESS

THE 1,000th Lublin 23--ton lorry has been completed at a factory in Lublin, Poland, named after the country's president, M. Boleslaw Bierut. When the plant has reached full capacity, it will turn out 20,000 lorries a year.

LEYLANDS FOR SPAIN

THE first fi.ve of 50 new Leyland double-deck bus chassis on order for Madrid were delivered last week. With these five chassis, which are for Empresa Municipal de Transportes, seven Comet 90 trucks for individual Spanish operators were also shipped.

A further consignment comprising six heavy-duty goods vehicles, a number of Comet 90 trucks and a Royal Tiger underfloor-engined passenger chassis are being sent to Spain this week.

PUBLICITY IDEAS WANTED

AN invitation to employees to criticize the concern's advertisements and to suggest improvements, has been made by Mr. H. Bottom ley, general manager of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd. The task of selling seats in coaches and buses required a technique of its own, said Mr. Bottomley. Cash prizes would be awarded to authors of suggestions and ideas which were adopted.

The London sales office of Nile Batteries, Redditch, Wares, has been transferred to 53, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1.

A spare-parts list for County fulltracks, as fitted to the new Fordson Major tractor, has been published by County Commercial Cars, Ltd., Fleet, Hants.

The Leyland, Farington and Chorley factories of Leyland Motors, Ltd., will be closed for the summer holidays from Friday night, July 18, to Monday morning, August 4.

A joint transport committee representing Shoreham, Southwick, Portslade and Hove, to protect bus passengers' interests, has been proposed by Southwick Urban District Council.
