Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Cab, which is slightly larger than its contemporaries and also big on all-round ability. We'll miss it, but not too much —we've just taken delivery of its stablemate...

It wasn't so long ago that living with a pickup meant abiding by certain rules to help you stay on the straight and narrow. Twitchy on-road handling, vague steering and a driveline made from elastic were all parlor the course.

But having spent a lot of time with the Nissan Navara we can safely say that things have moved on. What has impressed us most over thc past six months is the way everything works in harmony—from the driveline to the suspension, it all feels well engineered, inspiring confidence in conditions that would have left the previous generation of pickups struggling to stay composed. What's more, that civilised on-road behaviour hasn't been achieved at the expense of off-road ability.The Navara is still a good old-fashioned mud-plugger when req uircd, digging in on rough terrain in fourwheel drive, while the 172hp engine gives it plenty of urge when tackling inclines.

But squeezing so much power from the 2.5-litre turbo-diesel means low-down torque has been sacrificed; you need to wind it up to nearly 2,(XX)rpm before you get the full force of its mighty 403Nm.

The Navara is noticeably larger than its contemporaries so it demands an element of caution when passing vehicles on country lanes or parking up. But that size means welcome extra cab space and the load area is impressive too— the biggest in its class.

Those hefty loads can be kept in their place with the (optional) C-Channel securing system, which comprises five rails with selflocking cleats.

Our Navara was the Outlaw version, coming with everything from sat-nay to cruise control to make life that hit easier. But now it's time to take a step down as we have exchanged our King Cab for a double-cab model, complete with SE package. If it's anything like our departing steed we won't be disappointed. •
