Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

coupling and avoiding overloading of the trailer axles. Bradley has introduced a sensor that gives an audible signal when the load is far enough forward on the trailer. Spencer recommends that when coupling an unladen trailer its nose should be 25-50mm higher than the rear to avoid handling problems.

Stockport believes some operators pay insufficient attention to load restraint: "Straps should have a rating of double the weight of the vehicle or load being secured, and there should be a minimum of two rear and two front straps for retaining cars."

A huge number of trailer configurations arc available. Ifor Williams, for example, builds more than 25,000 light trailers a year, ranging from load-carrying trailers to plant carriers, mixers and tippers. Most of these feature galvanised steel chassis with leaf-sprung beam axles. Axle configuration ranges from singleaxle to triaxle for long loadbeds (for car transporting, for example).

Options include tailboards, lead-on ramps, headboards, winches and aluminium floor.

Williams' General Duty range now includes the GD106 and GD126 trailers, which have a rectangular steel framework integrated with the chassis. The galvanised panels can be slotted into the frame, or the flatbed can be used to carry plant.

Hydraulically tilting platforms. originally developed for sports cars, are also proving popular for some low-slung plant, according to Brian James. In a bid to increase its share of the general trailer market, Brain James has introduced the multi-purpose Car-Go to its AutoTrailers range. It comes in two-axle and triaxle configurations, an ultra-low bed and a five-year warranty.

Bradley's Sentinel plant carrier features an electronic nose-load measuring system for pinpoint positioning of the load; LED lights to eliminate bulb failures; and a compensating front axle to prevent overloads. •
