A dedicated logistics institute will open this summer to support local operators and provide undergraduate courses. Chris Tindall reports.

THE ONLY DEDICATED Institute of Logistics in the north of England will open in Hull this July, with a brief to establish a world-class centre of excellence in logistics.

The £20m investment, funded by regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, the European Regional Development Fund and Hull University, will offer support for businesses and a range of undergraduate logistics courses, including a logistics-themed academic degree.

Research will be carried out at the institute; weekly 'breakfast seminars' will cover topical supply chain management issues.

The institute's director, professor John Mangan, says a primary objective will be to work with small to medium enterprises (SMEs) including a free business support programme for SMEs in Hull, Bridlington. Immingham and Grimsby.

Mangan explains: "Managing supply chains effectively is a complex and challenging task, due to the current business trends of expanding product variety, short product life cycles, increased outsourcing, globalisation of businesses, and continuous advances in information technology.

The Humber, as a global gateway to the north of England and beyond,is ideally positioned to play a leading role in global supply chains."

Education Secretary and Hull MP Alan Johnson recently visited the Institute of Logistics. He describes the facilities as"first class", and adds:"I now know what all the fuss is about."
