THE AVERAGE hourly pay for category C+E drivers has risen by 9.4% since the Road Transport Directive took effect — but operators still identify a lack of qualified drivers as a major problem.
According to a survey carried out by Incomes Data Services and the Road Haulage Association, artic drivers are earning an average of £8.23/hr. Their average gross weekly pay, including bonuses and overtime, is £470. Category C drivers are averaging £7.60/hr, 6.4% higher than a year ago, with average weekly pay of £406. Van drivers are averaging £7.04/hr, up 7.2% on last year.
The survey, which took results from more than 100 companies. shows that transport managers earn an average of £34,808 for an average 38 hours a week. Examples include Lambert BrothersHaulage, where a transport manager with responsibility for more than 75 staff earns between £30,000 and £40,000 a year. At Massey Wilcox Transport a transport manager with responsibility for 60 staff earns £28,000. More than a third of respondents reported recruitment or retention problems, though they say the situation has improved since last year.
The companies surveyed comprised 68% small firms, 19% medium-sized firms and 13% large firms.
