Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Two 14-ton Oil-engined Chassis Equipped with Butterfield 3,000 -gallon Tank Bodies TUST prior to the Scottish Show in November last, E. R. Foden and Son (E.R.F., Ltd.), Sandbach, Cheshire, introduced an eight-wheeler for 14-15 ton pay-loads. The accompanying illustration shows one of these machines equipped with a 3,000-gallon tank made by W. P. Butterfield, Ltd., Shipley. It is the first of an order for two received from Reliance Motors (Diesel) Co., Preston, and is to be used for the transport of edible oils.

The chassis has a Gardner 6LW oil engine, developing 98 b.h.p. at 1,550 r.p.m.—its governed speed. By a fourspeed unit-constructed gearbox and a needle-roller-bearing-jointed propeller shaft, this transmits power to both rear axles, a differential being interposed between the two. In both cases the final drive is by overhead worm, and the live axles are of the fully floating type.

Brakes on the wheels of the first, third and fourth axles are applied by the Dewandre-Lockheed system, whilst the hand lever operates brakes on only the two rearmost wheels.

When laden with 14 tons of oil, the weight distribution of the tanker is 14 tons 14 cwt. on the rear bogie and 6 tons 3 cwt. on the front. Unladen, the figures are 3 tons 8 cwt. and 3 tons

cwt. respectively.

B44

A maximum speed of 28.4 mIp.h. is said to be attainable in the top gear of 6.75 to 1 and a consumption rate of 10-12 m.p.g. is claimed.

The 3,000-gallon elliplical mild-steel tank is jacketed with a 2-in, lagging of Alfol, and is provided with a beating coil for maintaining the fluidity of the contents. It is mounted on lightweight steel bolsters and equipped with quickrelease manhole covers, platform and ladder. Its dimensions are 20 ft. by 7 ft. by 4 ft. 7 ins. The cab is a product of S. Jackson, Ltd.
