Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

At the bi-annual meeting of the Scottish Federation of Grocers' and Provision Merchants' Association, Mr. J. Thomson, of Dundee, in connection with the keeping of records of hours, journeys, etc., under the Road and Rail Traffic Act, said that the Act should never have applied to the small retail trader. In the case of the ordinary grocer, the men were employed only half the time driving and the other half on the premises, and a concession should have been made to this trade.

A resolution in the name of the Garloch and Donside Association, which was adopted, requested the Minister Of Transport to consider an amendment of the Act to provide for the exemption of all holders of Class C licences who were grocers, provision merchants and allied traders using, vehicles with an unladen weight of 3 tons and under within a radius of 25 miles.

Extensions of Drivers' Hours.

In connection with our notes on the hours of driving, published on page 744 in our issue for last week, we would point out that the extension of the limit to 12 hours on two days in any week, where a driver employed by the week receives at least one complete day's rest of 24 hours in each week, applies only to drivers of vehicles 'operating under Class A and B licences.

The Berlin International Show. In connection with the International Motor Exhibition in Berlin from February. 14-24, the German railways will grant visitors from'abroad a 60 per cent, reduction in fares, if they re:main in Germany for more than a week, whilst the Lufthansa Air Co. will make a 10 per cent. reduction.

East Midland Traffic Area Dinner.

The third annual dinner of the staff of the East Midland Traffic Area was held at Nottingham on . January 11, and a very interesting combined programme and menu was prepared in " official form." There were about 100 guests present, and Mr. J. H. Stirk, J.P., IVLInst.T., took the chair. He mentioned that in January, 1931, the staff was 10; it now totalled 80. Since the licensing of carriers had commenced 59 public inquiries had been held, and nearly 16,000 applications had been dealt with. During last year nearly 200,000 letters had been sent.

15 m.p.h. in Hertfordshire Village. The Minister of Transport has informed Hertford County Council that he has approved a maximum speed limit of 15 m.p.h. on approximately half-a-mile of the main road A5, in the village of Markyatestreet.

A census taken in September last showed that 6,537 vehicles traversed the village during a period of 24 hours, more than half of them being commercial vehicles with a total weight of approximately 26,500 tons. The .main. part of the road here is, in places, only 16 ft. wide.
