licence to a Birmingham-based halal meat company after being assured it was completely separate from South Wales based Pak Halal Meat (see story, left). But first the TC wants to see a number of documents.
When Pak Mecca Meats applied for a new fourvehicle licence at a Birmingham public inquiry, the IC asked for confirmation from the company's bankers of its overdraft facility; copies of the vehicle excise licence discs for two of its vehicles; and an explanation following a conviction for failing to give particulars eta driver.
Conceding that sole director Mohammed Akhram had been a director of Pak Halal, Michael Carless, for the company, said there had been a comprehensive fall-out and Akhram had resigned his directorship of that company in May 1996. Six of the convictions declared in the application form related to Pak Halal, The Pak Mecca vehicles, which had been operated under interim authority since December, had been acquired from Pak Halal, but it seemed they had never been taken off its licence. Carless believes that Pak Halal was now either in receivership or liquidation. Pak Mecca had a substantial turnover and there had never beer any financial problems, said Khan. The use of outside transport would be costly and there could be religious problems if the contractor had previously carried pigs or pork. Carless suggested that Pak Mecca was a far less chaotic operation than Pak Halal.
Warning that Pak Mecca must keep out of trouble in the future, the IC said it seemed the problems with Pak Halal had arisen after Akhram had left that company.
