Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Christopher Walton SEPTEMBER 2009 could see a spike in truck registrations when Euro-5 becomes mandatory for all heavy commercial vehicles, forecasts Dal's UK managing director, Stuart Hunt.

Following the reinstatement of the Reduced Pollution Certificate (RPC) in 2007, HGVs fitted with a Euro-5 engine will enjoy a concessionary rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) worth as much as £500 per year. However. Euro-5 trucks registered after 1 October 2009 will not receive the RPC.

Hunt says: "We will see the end of the RPC on September 30 as Euro-5 regs become mandatory.

"The RPC can be worth up to £500 per year for the life of the truck if it has been registered before 30 September. If the same truck is registered the day after, it's worth absolutely nothing.

"That'll mean there will be a registration spike in the last week of September 2009; and it could lead to a problem for manufacturers who have large stocks of Euro-4 trucks.

"Luckily, that shouldn't include Daf, since over 80% of our heavy trucks are already at Euro-5. We already have considerably more experience of Euro-5 and its operational consequences than any other manufacturer."

Hunt also made the prediction that Dais UK sales could fall to between 35,000 and 40,000 throughout 2009.
