Water Purifier . NOW available for garage use is a new method of producing 11 purified water called the Deminrolit water purifier. This is designed and manufactured by The Permutit Co. Ltd.

The Deminrolit is a small plastics cartridge which is affixed to a wall close to the mains water tap. Water is run through the unit and so purified by a process of ion exchange. This process, unlike distillation, enables all the unwanted dissolved salts in the water to be removed without applying heat or power.

The only running cost involved is the replacement of the cartridge—a simple colour change indicator shows clearly when the cartridge is exhausted. The amount of water a cartridge will treat depends on the natural characteristics of the water being used. Examples quoted by the makers are: London, about 40 gal.; Manchester, 100 gal.; Glasgow, about 200 gal.

Made by The Permutit Co. Ltd., Permutit House, Gunnersbury Avenue, London, W.4.

Anti-corrosive ANEW anti-corrosive material, called Ferropro, is now being marketed by Surface Treatments Ltd. This is a liquid chemical compound with a plastics base which, it is claimed, destroys rust and at the same time forms a protective coating. The plastics base seals the surface to which it is applied; paint may be applied, if desired, at a later date—the life of the paint being increased by as much as three to five times.

Ferropro can be applied by brush, swab, or spray and Otliy a light application is required; the makers state that one gallon will treat 1.000 sq. ft. of surface. The material can be used for many applications, but is particularly useful in the treatment of rusty structural steel, tanks, wrought iron and so on. It is also suitable for treating metal of thin gauge.

Made by: Surface Treatments Ltd., 133 Great Hampton Street, Birmingham. 18.

Price: 5s. 6d. (8 oz.); El 14s. (+ gal.): £2 14s. 6d. (1 gal.).

Flameproofing Glass-fibre Moulding AMETAL spraying process has been developed by F. W. Berk and Co, Ltd. which enables glass-fibre mouldings to withstand temperatures of more than 700°C.

The surface of the moulding is first grit-blasted with steel grit, then a flash coating of zinc (between 0.001 and 0.002 in thick) is sprayed on. A coating of aluminium is then sprayed on to prevent surface oxidation of the zinc coating.

The thickness of the aluminium coating will depend on the substrate and the degree of fire retardation required—the thicker the coating the greater the fire resistance. The flash coating of zinc improves the adhesion of the aluminium coating in conditions where the resin in the moulding tends to melt out on to the surface.

An aluminium coating thickness of 0-006 in. will not burn under a flame temperature of 700`C.. but the same flame would ignite an uncoated glass-fibre moulding.

Developed by: F. W. Berk and Co. Ltd., Engineering Division, Paramount House. 75 Uxbridge Road, Ealing, London, W.5.
