THERE is likely to be a battle royal
in the Northern traffic area 'text month when two applications by A. Stevens (Haulage) Ltd., of Great Ayton. are heard. One of the applications is an eight-vehicle Contract A to new open A licence conversion, which is an attempt by the company to switch Contract A vehicles working for Skinningrove Iron and Steel Co. Ltd.
The second application is the one which, I gather, could be interesting. It is in the form of a variation of an existing A licence by which Stevens one of the Northern " Big Three" longlength and abnormal and indivisible steel carriers—seeks to uplift the weights of some of its semi-trailers. The wording of the application in Applications and
Decisions is somewhat ambiguous. It asks for an " increase in weight of seven trailers to four tons each for articulated purposes. . . ."
The wording of the application gives no indication of the original unladen weights of the trailers--which is against normal practice in the area--and neither does it state whether the vehicles are in possession or are " to be acquired ". ft is for this reason that objections have been lodged.
Within the past year or so the Northern Licensing Authority. Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon. has dealt severely with many Tees-side hauliers who have increased the weights of their semitrailers without informing him, and, as I said, the hearing may prove interesting.
