Mr. M. J. Baker, sales manager of The Power Petroleum Co. Ltd., retires on December 31 after more than 38 years' service in the company. He is particularly well known in the Midlands and amongst members of the national and municipal transport undertakings, at whose gatherings he was invariably to be seen. Mr. Baker joined.Power in 1926 as a representative at Charlton, and his appointments, until he became sales manager in 1961, included assistant sales manager and group manager. He is being succeeded by Mr. G. A. Long, who is at present the company's London divisional manager.

Mr. R. Freeson, M.P. for Willesden East, has been appointed joint Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mr. T. Fraser, Minister of Transport, and Mr. S. Swingler, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry. Mr. N. G. Brookes, who has been chief engineer of the Aldershot and District Traction Co. Ltd. since 1943, is to retire on age limit at the end of next March.

Aid. William Bridge, of York, chairman of the Yorkshire (Leeds, West Riding) area of the Road Haulage Association, and managing director of Flowers Transport Ltd.. York, and of associated companies in the north-east, is to be the next Lord Mayor of York for the year 1965-66. Ald. Bridge is the nominee of the Conservative Group on the City Council, under an agreement between the Conservatives and the Labour members on the council, to nominate a Lord Mayor in alternate years.

The following appointments have been made in the Pirelli tyre sales organization: Mr. R. W. V. Muller, previously special representative Bristol region, has been appointed district manager, London South. Mr. K. G. F. Al!sop, previously special representative for Nottingham, has been appointed Nottingham district manager in succession to Mr. D. G. Hulme, who is taking up another appointment with a Pirelli subsidiary company. Mr. P. J. Utley has been appointed special representative, Bristol region, and Mr. W. W. H. Fraser, special representa-tive, Nottingham district. Both were formerly area representatives, London North. Maj.-Gen G. N. Russell has been appointed a director and chairman of Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd. and Eastern Coach Works Ltd., the vehicle manufacturing subsidiaries of the Transport Holding Company, replacing Mr. M. A. Holmes, who, as reported in our December 4 issue, is to take over the chairmanship of the London Transport Board. Maj.-Gen. Russell, who retired from membership of the British Railways Board last September, was chairman of the original Road Transport Executive when it was formed with nationalization in 1948.

Mr. A. C. Elphick, who is to retire at the end of the year after 31 years' service with the West Bridgford passenger transport department, Notts, received retirement presents from the Urban District Council and from the transport department staff last week. Appointed general manager three years ago, Mr. Elphick is at present acting as joint-manager with his successor, Mr. H. J. Maiden.

Mr. Roy F. Ayris has joined Kingston Hill Motor Works Ltd., of Kingston, as commercial sales manager.

Mr. A. H. Gray has been appointed sales manager of the new automotive division of Oldham and Son Ltd., storage battery manufacturers, of Manchester, and Mr. V. Munns contracts manager.
