D OAD goods transport carried a total

of 1,248 million tons of traffic during 1962. Of this total, 509.5 million tons were moved by Aand B-licensed vehicles. No less than 861-1 million tons of the total moved travelled under 25 miles from point of origin to 'destination.

These are some of the facts. which emerge from two documents published yesterday by the Ministry of Transport. The documents are: "Survey of Road Goods Transport, 1962" (provisional results), price Ss.; and "Public Haulage Operators, Analysis by Size of Fleet, 1963 ", price Is. 6d. Both are obtainable from H.M. Stationery Office.

So far as fleet sizes are concerned, it is the first time such information has been made available. It has been compiled from the confidential index of public haulage operators which is kept at the Ministry of Transport.

The Ministry said yesterday that a limited index of C-licence operators, covering all those who operate vehicles exceeding 3 tons unladen weight, has been compiled. Analyses on these vehicles will be published " in due course ".

At December. 1963. it was estimated that there were 46.280 Aand B-licensed operators in Great Britain. These operators had an estimated total fleet of 205,600 vehicles. Of the total number of operators, 14,210 were estimated to hold A and Contract A licences, 24,560 had B licences and 7,510 held all types of licence The vast majority of operators ran fleets of one to five vehicles. In this category were 39,130-85 per cent of the total operators. Only 17 had fleets of more than 200 vehicles. Between 101 and 200 vehicles there were a further 33 operators. Between 50 and 100 vehicles theire were still only another 160 Operators.

So far as the public haulage loads carried were concerned, in 1962 as already stated) 861.1 million tons were on hauls under 25 miles. 188.8 million tons were hauled between 25 and 49 miles, 115-4 million between 50 and 99 miles and 82.4 million 100 miles and over.

On C-licensed vehicles, 536-1 million tons moved under 25 miles. 113.5 million between 25 and 49 miles, 59.2 million between 50 and 99 miles. and 29.5 million 100 miles or over.

Some of the main tables from these surveys will be published in next week's "Commercial Motor".
