"MO one is in a better position to
produce figures than the British Transport Commission," observed Mr. M. Dunbar Van Oss before the Transport Tribunal on Tuesday.
He was appearing on behalf of Mr. C. F, Gill, Stanground, near Peterborough, who responded to the Commission's appeal against a grant by the Eastern Deputy Licensing Authority of an A licence for an articulated vehicle to carry machinery and plant in England and Scotland.
Mr. I. R. C. Samuel-Gibbon, for the appellants, said that in December. 1958, Mr. Gill had added a third axle to his special-A-licensed four-wheeler. This represented an unauthorized increase in weight, but he did not suggest that Mr. Gill was dishonest.
Figures put in by Mr. Gill were "rather stale" as they did not cover the period during which the vehicle was used as a six-wheeler. B.T.C. evidence showed that there was no room for an additional articulated IoW-loader in the area.
Mr.. Van.lOss stated that. the B.T.C. had failed to produce.enongh figures to support theirease; aod referred to the evidence of a representative of Star Roadways, -Leicester, that . there would not be the,required facilities if the (unfit

On Wednesday Sir Hubert Hail, president,. announced .that • the appeal would be allowed to the extent that the licence granted -by the 'AtitlioritY• would
be suspend,cd ..for three weeks. This would mean , the: _suspenSion. of the tractor and: leaye the trailer free to be
drawn by any other vehicle.
The Tribunal considered that Mr.. GNI had acted irregularly in altering the _ . . _ . unladen weight of the 'tractor, hot that he had behaved throughout in good faith.

He thought it odd that the 'concern shmild seek more vehicles when they had disposed of a large number. Evidence was insufficient to justify a grant.
Mr. J. Hogg, manager of the company, said that special-A-licensed vehicles had been disposed of because they were unsuitable.
M2, STAGE ONE
TENDERS have been invited for the construction of the Medway Bridge, which will carry the 25-mile M2 motorway across the River Medway at Rochester. Tenders have also been invited for Shake Hole and New Cruxton bridges over the railway fine from Sole Street to Rochester.
The bridges will form the first stage in the construction of the Medway" motor road.
