By Chris Tindall ASDA IS PUTTING the inishing touches to a planning application that could see a 44-acre warehouse built in Rochdale, creating 800 jobs.

The development on the Kingsway Business Park includes around 500,000ft2 of warehousing and ofices, as well as a 135,000ft2 on-site waste recycling centre.

Asda says the aim is for the site to handle up to three million cases of chilled or frozen food every week, as well as other food products. Since the acquisition of competitor Netto in 2010 the company has identiied a shortfall in capac ity in the North West and Yorkshire in its warehouse provision.

“We need a new warehouse in the North West to service our growing number of stores, and Kingsway’s location and the fact that it has direct access to the M62 makes it ideal to service the whole of the north of England,” says Ant Everett, head of network development for Asda Distribution.

Rochdale councillor Peter Williams says: “If planning permission is granted we will be working closely with Asda in the run-up to the opening to make sure local people get every opportunity to apply for the 800 jobs being created and for local suppliers to have the opportunity to tender for work.” If the plans get the goahead, the retailer hopes to have the state-of-the-art distribution centre up and running by the end of next year.

Asda currently has 24 distribution centres servicing its stores across the UK.
