Fumes irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, and inhalation poses a health risk.
Petrol or LPG fumes contain up to 10% of the poisonous gas carbon monoxide while diesel exhaust, especially blue or black, can induce coughing, chestiness and breathlessness. Long-term exposure, says the HSE, increases the risk of lung cancer.
