Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Operators are now able to check would-be drivers' licence records

electronically. Sally Nash reports.

THE FIRST electronic licence checking system is now available in the UK it's designed to allow operators to check prospective drivers' licences are valid, supplying details of any endorsements.

Interactive Driving Systems, which provides fleet risk management systems, has teamed up with Intelligent Data Systems to offer the licence checking service.

It accesses the DVLA's system and should help operators with the recruitment process by identifying 'at risk' drivers who have a lot of points on their licences.

Will Murray, research director at Interactive Driving Systems, says: -Ibis service is particularly important for managing drivers who have two licences a clean one and a not so clean one."

Driver licence checks will be more important with the government cracking down on traffic offences involving bad driving. As part of the Road Safety Bill, currently going through parliament, new charges are proposed for causing death by careless and illegal (such as disqualified or unlicensed) driving.

Incidents of drivers using two licences have recently hit the headlines. In May, CM's legal section reported on a "desperate" truck driver threatened with jail for driving when disqualified and using a duplicate licence to obtain work (CM 26 May).
